30-man robbery gang attacks bank in Ekiti

A 30-man gang of bandits on Friday besieged a first generation bank in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ekiti State, wounding one person whose identity could not be immediately ascertained.

No life was lost during the attack.

Report gathered that the robbers stormed the bank on motorcycles at about 11:30am and made for the only police post in the town where attempts to rout the station were repelled by vigilant officers on duty.

Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, told journalists in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, that the bandits shot sporadically into the air, wounding a bank official, who had since been taken to an undisclosed hospital in the state.

Following the attack, banks hurriedly shut their gates to customers as early 12 noon, while commercial activities around places like Adebayo area of the capital stood still for nearly two hours.

Motorists coming from Ido Ekiti reportedly made a detour through Osi- Osi-Awo road, while those coming into Ado through Oye-Ifaki road were forced to turn back.

Though, Police authorities in the state are yet to confirm the casualty figure, Police Commissioner said three men were suspected to have been responsible for planting the explosives.

The Police boss, Kudu Nma, said a vehicle marked “Yobe Line” might have been responsible for bringing the suspected bombers to the park.

“A vehicle which was suspected to have carried the bombers who came in with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) was recovered,” he said. “Unfortunately for them, they were caught when they were about to run away,” he said.

The bomb went off at about 9.30 am, today at the ever busy Gombe Line Park. The park belongs to the state government owned Gombe Line Transport Services Limited.

Chinedu Ubachukwu emerges Gulder Ultimate Search season 11

ultimate

Chinedu Ubachukwu

After more than three weeks in the jungle, a winner has finally emerged in the Gulder Ultimate Search competition. He is Chinedu Ubachukwu, a 24-years-old indigene of Anambra State. By his victory on Thursday night, he became the 11th champion of the nation’s longest running reality TV show and will smile home with N10 million and a brand new SUV.

To attain the feat, however, Ubachukwu edged out Emmanuel Afolabi, 28, and Nne Cosy Joe, 29. Only the three men, out of all the contestants, survived the harsh weather and arduous tasks they were subjected to in the jungle of Aguleri, Anambra State.

Incidentally, on the morning of the final search, both Emmanuel Afolabi and Cosy Joe gave Ubachukwu their lanterns, telling him “this will light your path”. They had made the statement innocently while trying to shed their load, little did they know it was prophetic as Ubachukwu’s light would eventually shine the brightest.

Their final task was to retrieve the great General’s war helmet, which according to folklore, had been hidden in the belly of Aguleri forest for ages. Ironically, when the contestants commenced their journey from Boat Landing, where they camped the previous night, Ubachukwu appeared the weakest of them. He even lamented that he was not 100 per cent fit, adding that if the final search for the helmet turned physical, he stood no chance of getting it.

Ubachukwu was the last to climb over a very high wall and the other contestants insisted that he should be the first to cross a rope ladder suspended between two trees because he appeared weak. As the search neared its end, Ubachukwu appeared to regain his strength and the trio raced across a river, which was at their waist-level, towards their workstations situated at the belly of the Aguleri forest. There they met an emissary of the Council of Elders sporting a red cloak. His duty was to grant them right of passage only after correctly piecing together the tiles that they found during their long trek.

Cosy Joe was the first to solve the riddle, followed by Ubachukwu and then Afolabi. They raced towards three canoes and paddled away in different directions. Both Afolabi and Cosy Joe appeared to paddle their canoes aimlessly while Ubachukwu paddled towards a particular direction – a fire spitting clay pot. At this point, Cosy Joe appeared frustrated and angrily hit the water with his bare hands. As Cosy Joe paddled his boat to shore and later alighted on land, Afolabi attempted to move his canoe in Ubachukwu’s direction. But the latter moved faster and quickly retrieved the great General’s Helmet surrounded by three fire pots. With that feat, he joined the Order of Heroes as the 11th winner of Gulder Ultimate Search.

Chidi Mokeme, the anchorman, soon arrived on canoe and congratulated Ubachukwu on his great feat. He said: “After 26 murderous days in the Aguleri jungle, after days and nights of pain and sorrow; thinking about the unknown, nursing your wounds with sweat, with blood, it is you Chinedu who made it here. It is you who has carved your name in history. It is you who has earned the bragging rights. It is you who has made it into the elite league of extra ordinary warriors. By the powers conferred on me by the Council of Elders, I now pronounce you Last Man Standing!”

Incidentally, when the relatives of the final four contestants paid them a visit in the jungle two days earlier, it was only Ubachukwu’s mother that urged him to return home as champion. Amidst tears, Mrs. Ubachukwu had told her son, “I know you will make me proud. Come home with the crown.”

Two other contestants would also receive brand new vehicles. They are Samantha Appi, who will drive home a brand new Ford Eco sport for emerging as the Last Woman Standing, and the winner of the Viewers’ Choice award, who will go home with a Ford Focus.

Nigerians, others spend £4million on choice UK property every week

A report in yesterday’s London Mail has detailed how African, especially Nigerian, buyers are spending almost £4million on London property every week. The report said they were snapping up exclusive investments in the United Kingdom.
“Super-rich oligarchs are taking their vast resources and investing them in the safe haven of London property – with more than £600million spent in the capital in the past three years. A mixture of traditional reasons combined with increased terrorism and the outbreak of Ebola is said to be behind the dramatic influx of African money to the capital.

“While African buyers only account for 1.5 per of transactions in the ‘ultra prime’ London market, they make up five per cent of sales by value – up from two per cent. This is by typically spending between £15million and £25million on each home,” said the report.
The report said the interest of Nigerians and other wealthy Africans in London property has gone up since the Ebola outbreak and continued terrorism from as Boko Haram and others.
Beauchamp Estates, which sells some of London’s most expensive homes, yesterday released a report on African buyers in the capital.

Nigeria leads five other countries, Ghana, Congo, Gabon, Cameroon and Senegal, on the list of big time players in the UK property market.
The report reads: “Nigerians are the biggest spenders, with wealthy nationals forking out £250million on London homes in the last three years.
“The new wave of super-rich includes Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian business magnate who, with a £16billion fortune, is Africa’s wealthiest man.
“Folorunsho Alakija, a billionaire oil tycoon, fashion designer and philanthropist from Lagos, is also a big investor in the London property market. She recently bought four apartments in One Hyde Park, the super-exclusive development in Knightsbridge.

“Her British-born nephew Rotimi Alakija, who also goes by the stage name of DJ Xclusive, has also invested property in the capital.
“It is thought other tycoons have also been eyeing up homes on Kensington Palace Gardens – known as Billionaires’ Row.”

Managing Director, Beauchamp Estates, Gary Hersham, said he has had three super-rich Nigerians enquiring about homes in the past week alone.
He said: “ I’ve had an upturn in African buyers over the last few months. The situation in West Africa at present is pushing rich African buyers back into Central London at a significantly higher level than is normally experienced.

“While war, disease and terrorism in West Africa grab media headlines, actually for super-rich Africans its domestic wealth, cultural ties to London, general safety and education for their children that are the key attractions for buying a home in central London.”
Hersham said these super-rich look to buy property in the ‘platinum triangle’ — Mayfair, Belgravia and Knightsbridge.

The report added: “Around 80 per cent spend between £15million to £25million on a residential property, with ten per cent spending more than £30million. If they are not buying, they are renting luxury homes for up to £15,000-per-week and staying for between six weeks and three months per year.
“London’s reputation for having a residential property market, which is secure and a stable investment, is one of the main reasons wealthy Africans are buying, according to Beauchamp Estates. Another reason is historic cultural and community ties.

“Nigeria is a Commonwealth country and there is a community of 70,000 in London. There are a similar number of Ghanaians in the capital. The third reason is education, with King’s School Canterbury, Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham Ladies College, Eton, Harrow and Bradfield are among the favourite private schools for wealthy families from Africa.

“According to the Nigerian embassy, Nigerian nationals spend more than £300million-a-year on tutoring, accommodation, fees and equipment at British schools and universities.”
Hersham added: “ It is going to be the African century. Continental African buyers or luxury tenants in London are currently where the Russians and Ukrainians were five years ago. At present virtually all the transactions are for end use, not rental investment, which indicates that the African buyer market in London has significant room for growth and maturity. Nigerians have been long standing property purchasers in the central London market, going back to the early 1980s.

“However, in the 1980s and 1990s they typically purchased houses in North London, in Hampstead, St Johns Wood and Primrose Hill.
“Now, enhanced wealth has enabled them to move into the ultra prime market in Mayfair, Belgravia and Knightsbridge, and have been joined by affluent purchasers from other West African and French equatorial states.”

Cultists Arrested For Threatening To Kill Female Lecturer In Yabatech

 00136 Cultists Arrested For Threatening To Kill Female Lecturer In Yabatech

Two suspected cultists, who are students of Yaba College of Technology, have been nabbed for threatening to kill their lecturer, Mrs Abraham Ibe.

The pair, 24-year-old Tayo Ogunyomi and 28-year-old Kehinde Olaoye, appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Yaba, Lagos on Tuesday, 28 October.

The offences were committed on 16 October at 9 pm on the school campus.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Rita Momah, the accused had been earlier caught cheating during a recent examination conducted in the school, adding that the students sent text messages to the phone of their lecturer, threatening to kill her.

Momah said, “They sent text messages to Mrs Ibe stating that they were ‘Axe men’ and members of the Aye confraternity, a secret society. They stated also in their message that they would exterminate her.”

The suspects were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of public peace and membership of an unlawful society.

The accused would however, plead not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Erinle, in her ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 each with two sureties each in like sum, while adjourning the case till 11 November.

ROBBERS WRITE LAGOS RESIDENTS, DEMAND END-OF-YEAR GIFTS .

Residents of Onimaba, College Bus stop, Ikotun Road, Igando, Lagos have been living in fear since last week Thursday when a letter purportedly written by armed robbers circulated their streets, which was typed on an A4 paper and scattered on the streets, was noticed by residents as they woke up on Thursday morning.
About 20 copies of the letter were said to have been picked up from streets such as Lateef Bello, Ogunbewon, Taiwo Adediran, and Alhaji Hamzat.

These people called the attention of landlords to the document, and the landlords association was said to have reported at the Igando Police Division.

In the paper, the robbers wrote that residents should be prepared to ‘entertain’ them as they were coming for their end-of-the-year packages. The robbers added that they could strike the area at any time they deemed fit.

The letter reads,-- “Be prepared, be prepared, be prepared. Our dues must be paid this festive season. Nobody can stop us as we can strike at any time. Only enough money can save your life.
“To be forewarned is to be fore-harmed. We have warned you in this area, and if you have ears, you ought to hear.”
  One of the landlords, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons, said the robbers also dispatched the letter to neighbouring areas such as Pako and Irepodun.
He said, “On Thursday morning, around 4.30am when people normally start to go to work, we noticed the papers scattered on our streets. Some unknown persons, no doubt, had dumped the letter overnight in the area.

“We have about 18 streets in the area. When we saw it, we called on our CDA chairman, Alhaji Sarumi, who in turn called on the police at Igando.”
Another landlord, who identified himself simply as Alhaji Lawal, showed our correspondent the dilapidated fences of a government primary school in the area which the robbers allegedly used as a hideout.
He said, “The threat letter is very disturbing. The last time we had a robbery incident in this area was about six months ago. At that time, they came in through the compound of Igando Local Government Primary School, and escaped through Potoku, an unfenced canal at an end of our street. Potoku Canal reaches all the way to Lagos State University Road, Igando.

“We are calling on the police to intensify efforts in securing our area. We want the Area Commander, Area M Idimu, and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad to beam their searchlight on our areas.”

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, however said the residents had yet to report to the police. He added that the public should always avail the police of relevant information to enable them ensure security of lives and property.

He said, “The incident has not been reported to the Igando Police Division. However, if the residents have received such letter, let them bring it to the police. If there is such information, we will do well to ensure we deploy enough personnel in the area. The responsibility of the police is to ensure safety of lives and property in the state.”

Wizkid talks wedding plans -- Why I'm not bothered people See me as arrogant"

Wizkid

Asked if it bothers him that people think he's arrogant, Wizkid said;

"Bother me? Never! I am not bothered. Honestly I don't hear people saying it because anytime I go out, I show my fans great love. I do my thing. I don't have problem with that because I don't love everybody as well. So I don't expect everybody to love me too. That's life"

Asked if he is terrible person, Wizkid said;

"Terrible? Everyone has opinion about people. But when they say Wizkid is terrible, you need to ask them, "Why is Wizkid a terrible person? What did he do? For four years, I was making music with Samklef, everyone knew his house. I was going up and down, shouting, Samklef Nor Ni. That's me, I am just trying to be a good person. Whereas everyone cannot like you and everyone cannot hate you" he said.

Asked if fame has in anyway changed him, Wizkid said

"No, fame has not changed Wizkid. The only thing fame has changed in Wizkid is that I added some accessories. I have got nice chains, watches, and nice clothes. Asides that, I am still Wizkid. I no tall, still same height"

He also reacted to his recent controversy with singer Saeon,

"Oh really? She's bitter about it. I didn't see the allegation but I gave her hit song. I no try? I did my part. I was in the studio with her, gave her hit song. I no try. That's not even how much I charge for collaboration, I charge N10 million. I collected N1.5 million from her because of love. I was busy, I didn't want to do it" he said.

Asked about the comment that he doesn't charge those he loves, Wizkid said;

"Yeah I don't charge people I love. I said so but when someone is on your neck everyday for a collaboration and she offers you money, won't you collect it? If you fail to collect it, they start calling you terrible person. I am just trying to be a good guy"

On his fashion sense, Wizkid said;

"Fresh! Am I not looking fresh? I have always loved chains a lot. For me, I also see chains as investment because they are gold and diamond. You can always sell anything gold and diamond. It is like an investment for me".

On why he loves to flaunt his accessories on social media, Wizkid said;

"You know now. I didn't have accessories when I started my career. Did you see me wearing bling-bling when I did Hola at your boi? No! I hustled to get money to buy them and there is no crime if I show it or flaunt it to my fans because they gave me money to buy them" he said

On where he invests his money, Wizkid said;

"I will say property but most importantly Jewelry. Do you know how much I can sell this chain on my neck when I get broke, God forbid? It's money and to me it's investment. I don't spend money on foolish things. I spend moderately. Besides I am a grown man. I have problems too. I have a child I am taking care of. I have responsibilities, believe it or not"

Asked if he is expecting another child, Wizkid said;

"Expecting wetin? Did I tell you I am expecting a child? Yes I didn't tell you guys when I was expecting my first child because people wanted to kill me but Honestly, nothing like that I am not expecting any child now"

Asked if he is getting married anytime soon, Wizkid hissed and said "Wedding? No!"

Nigeria 2015: How APC is Planning to Lose the Presidential Election!!!

apc

Contrary to the view in many quarters, the 2015 Nigeria Presidential election is not about Fashola or Oshiomole or Buhari, it is about a lasting structure to build a lasting democracy, and main opposition APC style as of now, cannot defeat the ruling PDP unless EPS is adopted.

PDP requires only 25% in most the states under APC and will still keep the South-East and South-South votes to win the presidency. It is the bitter truth.

The only life line for the APC is the recommendation on Expanded Primary System, EPS, which will make APC a grassroots party and easily it will be able to win the presidency if the party can run away from godfather mentality of kowtowing to General Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu, and give everyone the opportunity to grow; but what they have now can only fetch them couple of states in 2015.

The first American President George Washington told his country not to build their democracy around him but build it on institutions because a government system built around individuals will only give temporary solution, institution will take a nation up. In July President Obama delivered a speech in South Africa asking leaders in Africa to focus on three areas, Opportunities, Democracy and Peace.

EPS will provide opportunities for all politicians to grow, not the recycled leaders from the military days. With EPS the country can realize its full potentials from the pool of leaders that will emerge, and EPS will bring the lasting peace in our body politics in which tribalism and religion will be forced to play a back role. But the greatest set back to this may be the ambitions of General Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu in 2015, which APC is planning to lose the election if EPS is not taken on the primary face.

This is the bitter truth; think about it! What will four more years look like under President Ebele Jonathan? Not because he can do anything or effect a change, it will be for the failure of the leaders of APC to adopt a different strategy to bring the party to the grassroots of the electorates.

 All lovers of change in 2015 to ask Buhari, Ikimi, and Tinubu to adopt EPS or prepare to watch President Jonathan’s re-election from the sidelines as he wins four more years. Those asking Buhari to be the 2015 candidate of Party without EPS must be ready to accept the verdict of the electorates when President Jonathan wins again. If the General can win the nomination of the party through EPS nothing can stop him from winning the presidency anything beside this is failure for APC. Williams Shakespeare said in one of his plays Julius Caesar, “the eyes sees not itself except by other reflections.” APC right now is a party of the blind in the darkness, they need a generator or light to see.

I have no plan to leave APC – Atiku

Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that he has no plan to leave the All Progressives Congress.

He said in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday that those carrying the rumour that he would dump the party after he lost the APC presidential primary were not being sincere.

The former Vice President, who is a front runner among the party’s presidential aspirants, therefore, asked Nigerians to disregard any publication alleging that he would leave the party for either the Labour Party or the Peoples Democratic Movement.

He said he had traced the person behind the rumour to an unnamed member of the APC from the North-East zone, who he said was working for another presidential aspirant from the opposition party.

The statement said, “This information is not only egregiously false, but our investigations have traced it to a senior APC member from the North-East geo-political zone, who is working to further the presidential ambition of another aspirant within the party.

“He is also known to be working with certain elements in the Peoples Democratic Party. Sadly, the Atiku Media Office has, over the past few months, had to issue a number of rejoinders against falsehoods of such low quality published by the newspaper.

“We, hereby, advise the public to completely disregard any information about Atiku Abubakar on this matter.”

It will be recalled that the former Vice President had stated in a meeting with stakeholders in the media in Lagos last month that the APC was his “final bus stop.”

30 policemen still missing – IGP

Suleiman Abba
THE Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr Suleiman Abba, said yesterday that “about 30” policemen were still missing, more than two months after Boko Haram terrorists attacked their training facility in Gwoza, Borno state.

The police boss who contradicted his earlier statement that about 20 policemen remained accounted for while speaking with state house correspondents said that one of the policemen that went missing had returned to his base.

He said; “Last week we were able to identify that one of the missing officers in Gwoza had gone back to his base this time around. So, there can still be some that are in their homes, perhaps refusing to even report to anyone that they are around because of the trauma they went through.

“Or they could still be among the families in some of the villages around there. It is still our hope that they are alive and that they will come out alive” he said.

Thirty five police officers were declared missing following the deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters on the Mobile Police Training School, Gwoza, on August 23. A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu had said.

2015: Muslim-muslim, Christian-christian ticket dangerous – Obasanjo warns

Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has warned the country’s main political parties not to field a presidential ticket with two people of the same religion.

In a statement on Sunday in Abeokuta, the former president said, “It will be insensitive to the point of absurdity for any leader or any political party to be toying with Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket at this juncture.”

Although Mr. Obasanjo did not mention any political party in his warnings, observers of the 2015 political intrigues could term it as being targeted at the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

Although the APC has in the past said it was not planning to field such a ticket as warned by Mr. Obasanjo, the party has been accused of toying with a Muslim-Muslim ticket. A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, who left the party for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, listed such plans as one of his reasons for leaving.

The main presidential hopefuls of the APC- Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwakwanso – are Muslims, while the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, also a Muslim, has been touted as a possible running mate. The party is, however, yet to hold is presidential primaries.

On its part, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has virtually adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate; with the president expected to retain Vice President Namadi Sambo as his running mate. Mr. Jonathan is a Christian while Mr. Sambo is a Muslim.

In his warning, Mr. Obasanjo, whose support is being sought for the February 14, 2015 presidential elections by both parties, advised them to be sensitive to Nigeria’s religious diversity. Over 90 per cent of Nigeria’s 150 million population are belived to be either Christians or Muslims.

“Sensitivity is a necessary ingredient for enhancement of peace, security and stability at this point in the political discourse and arrangement for Nigeria and for encouraging confidence and trust,” he said.

Mr. Obasanjo added that “Nigeria cannot at this stage raise the spectre and fear of Islamization or Christianization. The idea of proselytization in any form is a grave danger that must not be contemplated by any serious-minded politician at this delicate situation in Nigeria; as this time is different from any other time.

“Therefore, disregarding the fact that there are fears that need to be allayed at this point will amount not only to insensitivity of the highest order but will also amount to very bad politics indeed.”

2015: Why we’re introducing card readers –Jega

•Warns Nigerians to register, vote where they reside

The chip-based Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) currently being issued by voters will be replaced with card readers in the 2015 general elections to ensure 100 per cent verification and authentication of voters.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega made the clarification while delivering a public lecture on ‘Values, Electoral Systems and the Importance of Successful Elections in Nigeria’s Foreign Policy’, at the weekend in Lagos. The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) organized the event.

Jega warned eligible voters to register and vote where they reside, explaining that it will be a futile effort for any voter to travel from his or her place of residence, hoping to vote in another city or village.

He said in order to address the critical challenges faced in the 2011 general elections, the commission had made recommendations for improvement to the legal framework, saying the constitution and the Electoral Act had been submitted to the National Assembly.

The INEC boss cited the challenge posed by the period for run-off, which, he described as too short for adequate preparation.

According to him, the commission was seeking a period of three to eight weeks for run-off. Jega was confident that the commission would be able to conduct elections in the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Acknowledging the challenge of insecurity, and concern about Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, which had remained the theatres of Boko Haram insurgency, he said: “Deployment of electoral officers and materials will depend on advice by security agencies,” even as he insisted that INEC would be able to conduct elections across the country in 2015.

Apparently, the level of preparations, which the commission had made so far, informed Jega’s confidence. Giving a summary of the preparation, Jega said: “2015 elections have three focal points, namely structure, policy and plan.”
